Although the Upper East Side is known for some of the most expensive real estate in the world, amazingly it's also know for some of the best bargains in Manhattan.
If it's classic prewar doorman living that you are looking for, you will find a wide array on Fifth, Madison, and Park Avenues between 59th and 96th Streets. The Upper East Side is serviced by one of the city's most heavily traveled, yet most reliable subway lines, the 4,5 and 6 trains. There are express stations at 86th and 59th Street, and local trains at 96th, 77th, and 68th Street. All trains run on Lexington Avenue. Generally speaking the farther from the train you are the lower the rents are. There are numerous full service apartment buildings at great prices on York Avenue and a very large park, Carl Schulz on the water from 81st to 90th Street.
The Upper East Side is a picturesque and generally very safe area. As in any area if you are out late at night it's always a good idea to take a cab home and ask the driver to wait until you are in your front door, especially if you are not in a doorman building. Another great thing about living on the Upper East Side are the superb Public elementary schools. P.S. 6 on 83rd and Madison Avenue, and P.S. 158 on York Avenue and 77th Street are amongst the very best in Manhattan.
