Chelsea is a growing, vibrant, and in many places a historic area in New York's downtown. The livable boundries of Chelsea seem to be forever expanding. Chelsea begins on the South end at 14th Street and goes up to 28th Street on the North border, and West from Fifth Avenue to the Hudson River. Inside of Chelsea are many hot sub-areas from the Meatpacking district in the Far West teens, FloMa (Flower Market) in the mid 20's between 6th and 8th Avenues, and what I now call Chelsea Clinton on Northern border.
Chelsea is a cross section of New York real estate. You have numerous gorgeous 100-200 year old townhouses throughout, massive Skyscrapers along Sixth Avenue, and even housing projects in the 20's West. The far West Side keeps getting more and more interesting and residential. The meatpacking district is a great example. It used to be just what it sounds like, a meatpacking district. The meatpackers are almost gone, replaced by condo lofts, hotels, trendy boutiques and exceptional food and drink. One of the nicest parts of the Meatpacking District is it's scale. It feels like old New York, when 5 or 8 stories buildings were considered tall. This lends to a feeling of intimacy and connection with the past. Speaking of connections to the past, The High Line is an elevated railroad track that ran between buildings on the far West Side from 14th Street to the Railyards up near Penn Station in the 30's. Left to rot for years, this rail line was nearly torn down on several occasions, and now has recieved funding to be built into an elevated park. This project has increased pricing momentum in the area where developers are snapping up properties for future high rise condos. |
